Description:	The Marine Biological Association is seeking to appoint an experienced Geospatial Analyst to work on biological data. Working within the DASSH and MarLIN teams, the post will provide the management and dissemination of spatial data, spatial modelling and cartography services in addition to other tasks as required by external contracts. Tasks will include: • Quality assurance of 3rd party data • Creation and management of spatial data • Production and design of maps • Preparation and output of data for clients • Liaison with external data providers and contract managers Essential skills: • Experience with ArcGIS 9.x • Proven ability to handle large, complex datasets • Knowledge and understanding of coordinate systems and projections • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to work as a member of a small team and to tight deadlines • Experience editing and managing geospatial metadata • Some background or interest in biological sciences Desirable skills; • Experience with other mapping technologies (MapInfo, Google Earth etc) • Experience with ArcObjects and VBA • Creation, management and debugging of geospatial models. • Proven ability with ArcSDE, PostgreSQL, GeoServer and/or MapServer. An ecosystem approach to fisheries management involves moving away from the traditional single stock concept and taking a more holistic view of the industry and its place in the marine environment. For example, if sand eel stocks are depleted, how does this impact commercial species like cod, seabirds like the puffin and top marine predators such as seals and dolphins. In 2007 scientists from the Coastal and Marine Resource Centre (CMRC) and Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre (AFDC) of UCC’s Environmental Research Institute (ERI) were awarded one of the five prestigious Beaufort projects. By involving three partners (UCC, QUB and the Marine Institute) with expertise in marine ecosystems, modelling and fisheries, and by using a nested scalar approach, this project is examining issues on both a micro and macro level. Current impacts of fishing practices on the environment will be assessed and new management regimes will be explored. The summer bursaries, are designed to support the growing team of specialists who have been recruited to increase Ireland’s capacity in this important area of ecosystem approach to natural resource management. An ecological risk assessment of proposed restoration of a scallop fishery (2): The hydrographic model used to predict current flow around Valentia Island was developed by Prof Michael Hartnett (NUI Galway). Data gathered by the other Valentia bursary (see 4 above) will be used to validate and refine existing models. In the future these models will be used to predict the possible impact(s) of scallop fisheries management as part of an ecological risk assessment. The Co-op propose to restore a local scallop fishery. The organisations listed above are all contributing to a management plan involving all the key stakeholders - industry, fishermen, tourists, scientists and conservationists. Since the proposed development area includes an SAC and vulnerable habitats it will be necessary to include an ecological risk assessment into the management plan. Scallop broodstock from Valentia Harbour are being conditioned and spawned in the DOMMR in Bantry. It is proposed that early stage larvae will be released into Valentia Harbour at positions determined by an existing hydrographic model (see similar busary listed). The bursary student will be involved in both rearing the larvae and tracking them following their release. Data from the larval release experiment will improve the accuracy of the hydrodynamic model and thus lead to an informed ecological risk assessment. Jellyfish diet bursary: There is much evidence that jellyfish are increasing in abundance across the world as a result of climate change, eutrophication and overfishing. As jellyfish are important predators of zooplankton, their impact on fish eggs and larvae may be considerable and increasing. For example, in the Baltic Sea, Möller (1984) found 68 herring larvae (Clupea harengus) in the stomach of a single Aurelia aurita jellyfish. Unfortunately there are few studies on the diet of jellyfish in Irish (or UK) waters, yet jellyfish may be one of the most abundant and conspicuous members of our marine fauna. A bursary placement will be offered to work as part of a large international jellyfish project called EcoJel that aims to identify the impacts of jellyfish on fisheries (and aquaculture) and develop models to explore outcomes of climate change. The bursary student will help collect and analyse jellyfish samples to determine their diet and potential impact on fisheries. Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Edinburg from KEYCOM

USIP-JR Senior Fellowship

The Jennings Randolph (JR) Senior Fellowship provides scholars, policy analysts, policy makers, journalists, and other experts with opportunities to spend time in residence at the Institute, reflecting and writing on pressing international peace and security challenges.

Senior Fellowships usually last for ten months, starting in October, but shorter-term fellowships are also available. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country.

The Institute awards between 10 and 12 fellowships per year.

Priority is given to proposals deemed likely to make timely and significant contributions to the understanding and resolution of ongoing and emerging conflicts and other challenges to international peace and security.

Applications are invited from all disciplines and professions.

Applicants should propose projects with clear policy relevance. Historical topics are appropriate if they promise to shed light on contemporary issues. Area studies projects and single-case studies will be comeptitive if they focus on conflict and its resolution, apply to other regions and cases, or both.

Senior Fellow awards may not be granted for projects that constitute policymaking for a government agency or private organization, focus to any substantial degree on conflicts within U.S. domestic society, or adopt a partisan, advocacy, or activist stance.

Terms of Award

The program attempts to match the recipient's earned income during the year preceding the fellowships, up to a maximum of $100,000 for 10 months.
The Institute will provide coverage of 80% of health premiums for the Fellow and his/her eligible dependents, with a cap of $500 per month.
The Institute will also cover travel to and from Washington, D.C., for Fellows and their dependents.
Each Fellows is provided with a part-time research assistant during his/her fellowship.
The Institute does not provide housing in Washington D.C., but it provides information on housing, schools, and daycare.
Fellows are expected to be at the Institute and participate in the daily life of the Institute.
Fellows are expected to devote full attention to their fellowship work in order to complete their projects within the period of residency.
The Institute requires first right of review for manuscripts produced as a result of fellowship support.
An Institute fellowship may not be deferred or combined with any other major award.

Duration of Fellowship
Fellowships are usually awarded for 10 months beginning in October. Shorter-term residencies are also available.

Application procedure

In order to submit an application for scholarship, the applicant must fill-in the relevant application form for the respective University programme. Along with the University application each candidate must attain an official endorsement by her/his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs using the Endorsement Form (detailed instructions on the endorsement procedure are included in the document). The applicant may then submit his/her application along with the endorsement form at a Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus of their choice, not later than the deadline shown above for each University.

In order to expedite the process, it is strongly recommended that the applicant forwards a copy of the application form and a copy of the duly completed and stamped endorsement form to the Academic Institute organizing the program, as soon as he/she attains these documents. The originals should be submitted or sent to the Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus, before the deadline (as instructed above). It is noted that ONLY applications accompanied by duly completed and stamped endorsement forms (by the applicant΄s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) will be considered for a scholarship award. Candidates from Armenia should obtain an endorsement of their application through the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia.

Important notes concerning the award of scholarships:

1. Candidates who have received a scholarship of either short or long duration by the Republic of Cyprus within the last two (2) years 2008 or 2009 are NOT eligible to apply for these scholarships.

2. Eligible candidates must be permanent residents of their country of citizenship.

3. All scholarships are offered officially by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to other Governments on a bilateral basis as official technical assistance and not to individuals. Therefore, it is expected that with the end of the scholarship, the scholarship recipients will return to their country of citizenship so that the recipient country is benefited to the highest possible degree by the transfer of know-how and not just the individual receiving the scholarshsip.

4. For the scholarship to be awarded it is necessary for the candidate to accept the Terms and Conditions of the scholarship.

Orientation
scientifique : Peu avant le
sommet de Copenhague de décembre 2009, et dans les semaines qui ont suivi, les
travaux du GIEC et la “science du climat” sur laquelle est censée
sâ€™appuyer la coopération internationale dans la lutte contre l’effet de serre,
ont été violemment attaqués. Au même moment, certains gouvernements poussent à
la création d’un équivalent du GIEC pour la biodiversité en 2010, proclamée
« année de la biodiversité ».
De fait, la science joue
toujours un rôle essentiel mais très controversé dans les négociations
internationales sur lâ€™environnement et le développement durable. Invoqué pour
légitimer, accélérer ou retarder les décisions cruciales, le savoir ainsi
mobilisé est un construit social et politique, davantage que la simple
diffusion des recherches académiques menées dans les disciplines concernées.
Les décideurs comme les activistes des ONG mobilisent lâ€™expertise en fonction
de leurs stratégies politiques. De plus, la science « utile » est un
discours contesté dans et en dehors de la communauté scientifique. Retracer les
processus de construction du savoir légitime dans un champ de négociation
donné ; repérer les intérêts socio-économiques qui sous-tendent les
controverses scientifiques ; évaluer la dimension performative du discours
scientifique dans ces négociations ; ou encore analyser les enjeux
politiques dâ€™une légitimation de la décision par cette science pourtant incertaineâ€¦
Tels sont quelques unes
des questions de recherche pertinentes pour un tel travail. Lâ€™analyse de la
controverse publique entourant lâ€™activité du GIEC et la nébuleuse
climato-sceptique constituent un point de départ utile mais non-exclusif pour
cette étude.

Profilrecherché : le/la candidate (e) doit
être titulaire dâ€™un doctorat dans une discipline des sciences sociales, soutenu
avant lâ€™Ã©té 2010. Une préférence sera donnée aux docteur(e)s en science
politique et à des candidat(e)s ayant déjà travaillés sur lâ€™expertise ou le
rôle de la science dans la décision ou les négociations internationales.
Une culture scientifique
de base permettant de mieux comprendre les débats scientifiques autour du
climat, ou encore une formation initiale en sciences de la vie et de la terre,

travaillera dans le cadre du laboratoire SPIRIT et de son équipe de Relations

Research theme: Science
and politics in the international environmental negotiations,
controversies and influence

Rationale: Weeks before the December 2009 Copenhagen Summit and in the subsequent
months, the IPCCâ€™s work and the climate science that
is meant to provide the scientific basis for
efficient international cooperation tackling climate
change have been under violent attack. Yet
at the same time some governments advocate the
creation of the equivalent to the IPCC for the
biodiversity regime, as 2010 is labelled the â€œBiodiversity
Year».
Indeed science always plays a role but a contested one
in international environmental and
sustainable development negotiations. Mobilised to
legitimise, accelerate or delay crucial
decisions scientific knowledge deemed politically
useful is a social construct, the product of
policyâ€ oriented
strategies rather than the direct outcome of purely academic research
activities.
Decisionâ€ makers, NGO activists and lobbyist are keen to support the science that
is
strengthening their conflicting viewpoints. Therefore â€œusefulâ€
science is a contested discourse
both within and outside the scientific community.
To analyse the process of construction of
authoritative knowledge in an issue area; identify the
economic and social lobbies behind some of the current
controversies, assess the effective
impact of scientific discourse in regime negotiations;
or analyse the use of a contested and
uncertain science as a legitimising device are some of
the potential research questions to be
develop by the applicant (others of his own choice can
discussed too).
A good starting point although not the only option is
the analysis of the controversy
surrounding the IPCC and the attacks launched by
climate sceptics.

Applicantâ€™s profile: The applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent in one
discipline of the socials
sciences. The PhD should be defended before the Summer 2010. A priority will be given to PhDs
in political science or international relations,
especially students with a prior experience on the
politics of science and scientific expertise in
international negotiations.
A basic understanding of science, especially climate
science or some undergraduate training in
hard sciences will be additional assets.
Speaking and writing French is not a prerequisite
although it would be helpful to do some of the
interviews.

Conditions: The postâ€ doc will work
within the research centre SPIRIT and its International
Relations team under the supervision of professor
Daniel Compagnon and in collaboration with
climate scientists from University of Bordeaux I.
The postâ€ doc will participate to the activities of a research project currently
processed through
the ANR (appel CEP & S). In the course of the 12
month period the postâ€ doc
will write one
working paper to be posted on the SPIRIT website, two
articles for peerâ€ reviewed
journals,
including one coâ€ authored.

The University of Rome “La Sapienza” offers twenty three year full-time postgraduate PhD positions with fellowship for attaining the degree of “Dottore di Ricerca” (PhD) in the Doctoral Schools listed in appendix.

Each fellowship amounts to € 19.800,00 per year; this amount includes national insurance contributions (INPS) that fellowship recipients are required to pay (8,91% for 2010).
The fellowship doesn’t cover the annual entrance fee.

The PhD Programme lasts three years and may be extended to a fourth year (without grant), subject to approval by the School authorities. At the end of the first and second year of attendance, students have to be evaluated as proficient according to the rules of the Schools.

2. Admission requirements

Applications are opened to candidates who:

are not Italian citizens;
are not residents of Italy;
have obtained an academic qualification abroad by a non-Italian institution which satisfies the entrance requirements for admission to the Doctoral Programme, i.e., a degree equivalent to the Italian diploma di laurea/laurea specialistica/laurea magistrale, or expect to obtain it before 31 July 2010. The equivalence of each qualification to the relevant Italian degree will be ascertained (for the sole purpose of this competition) by the Academic Board of the Schools.

3. Selection and admissions

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the documents listed in 5.2. Successful applicants will be assigned to a Doctoral School. Each Doctoral School will decide in which Programme (within those belonging to each School, see enclosure) to enrol the candidate on the basis of both his/her preferences and interests.

4. Attainment of PhD

Students must attend the courses and the seminars offered by their Programme, pass the related examinations, and prepare a PhD dissertation, which must have original results. The PhD title is obtained at the end of the third year after the candidate dissertation and its positive evaluation made by an independent Jury appointed by the Rector. The discussion may be delayed with the approval of the School authorities, but not for more than one year .

I must say..we reached it...Ip man and Ip man 2 really take Kung fu movies to a whole another level. Donnie Yen who reprises his role as Ip Man is perfect. His acting is very good and he has perfect moves.

The fight scenes are awesome...while Ip Man has more drama than fighting, this one has much more fighting and less drama. Sammo Hung is awesome although he has problems with his heart. The fight scene between Hung and Yen is perfect, it's really enyoable..though I liked the last fight scene better...

For those who thought Ip Man was awesome...well after this movie you'll want to run out and start fighting random people(hehe)...I actually cried when I saw Donnie's speed in last fight...

This movie is worth to watch. Seriously..whatever you have to spend just do it. I'll give it 10/10 because of all the fightings scenes..even the story is OK, and the actors are great.

The whole story takes place in a pub which is owned by Judi Dench's character. She seems to have been enjoying the somewhat bohemian guests of hers for some years. We are in the aftermath of WWII. A lot of troubled minds are gathering in her place night after night to have a drink but even more importantly, a talk about life in general and all the quarrels that it brings. As I said, there are lots of bohemians there, film producers, writers and... well intellectuals of all kinds, plus the guests who simply don't seem to have elsewhere to go. Different issues are to be discussed over a period of some weeks. We see the same faces come and go over the time, affairs begin and end, long-time relationships come to an end and a new beginning. We see refugees from central Europe. There are topics like homosexuality during those days in the UK, the Holocaust that just took place, lost friends and how the guests of that pub deal with it all. All in all this occurs to me like a film-noir version of a post-war "vie en rose" set in London in the late forties. Basically everyone is trying to forget about something, or run from something, even trying to find the real self, finding some kind of orientation or running away from the ghosts of the past and all with the help from a lot of drinks. The genuine expression for this kind of behaviour is "escape", may it be sex or alcohol. Everyone is busy dealing with her / his own problems, instead of reflecting about the things to come or the things that were or the people that surround them.

Each scholarship will have a value of £1,500 per year, payable towards tuition fees in the first instance. Theme: The Road to Energy Security: Paved with Efficiencies, Renewable
Technologies and Investment

Energy security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time,
especially in light of its inextricable link to economic well-being and the
environment. However, the uneven distribution of energy supplies among
countries has led to significant vulnerabilities. Threats to energy security
include the political instability of several energy producing countries, the
manipulation of energy supplies, the competition over energy sources,
attacks on supply infrastructure, as well as accidents and natural
disasters. For these reasons, governments in nearly all the large consuming
nations are now considering various domestic and foreign policy measures to
increase energy efficiencies develop renewable technologies to scale and
create a positive investment climate for industry.

Against this backdrop, the Fall 2010 Jefferson Fellowships program will look
specifically at two of the largest users of energy, the U.S. and China, and
their efforts in addressing energy security. The program will take special
care to look at the challenges and opportunities involved in improving
energy efficiency and in developing renewable technologies. In addition,
the Fall 2010 program will examine the two countries’ efforts to facilitate
joint research and development. Finally, the program will examine how each
country seeks to promote public and private investment in the supplies of
today’s fossil fuel sources as well as the clean technologies that will
transform the energy system for the future.

Movie Review : Badmaash Company (2010)

Actor turned debutante director Parmeet Sethi made a startling confession on my show, a few days ago. He said, he had completed the entire script, with dialogue, in six days flat. I was apprehensive initially, but not once does BADMAASH COMPANY give you the feeling that it’s a hurried job or the debutante writer-director, in a bid to start his first film, had left blanks incomplete.

The earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed. The adage holds true for the youth of today, who wish to attain the riches overnight and take an easy route/shortcut to climb the ladder of success. Just when you start thinking that you’ve conquered it all, that you’re God, a stroke of bad luck brings you back to Ground Zero, to experience the harsh realities of life.

Parmeet walks the tight rope of handling a complex subject and offering entertainment simultaneously, in his very first film. To his credit, the film has several poignant and enjoyable moments that catch you by complete surprise. While the film has it all — the writing has the power to keep the viewer hooked — the film has a handicap in the form of its second hour, especially the penultimate 25-odd minutes.

Let me specify! With a running time of approx. 2.30 hours, the extra footage in the end — Shahid and friends trying to salvage his uncle’s business — only adds to the length of the enterprise. Ideally,the film should’ve ended when the friends forgive each other and shake hands, after a series of personal and professional setbacks.

Final word? BADMAASH COMPANY is a decent attempt, with several captivating moments and power-packed performances by each and every member of its cast. We often grudge that entertainment-laden films make no sense these days, but this one entertains and also makes sense. Watch it!

BADMAASH COMPANY is set in the 1990s in middle class Mumbai, of four ordinary youngsters [Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das], who came together to start an import business of things longed for by yuppie Indians. What made their venture such a stupendous success was the fact that they found a way to beat the system and soon became the undisputed kings in their business, realizing their one dream of making quick money is by doing all the wrong things the right way.

Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four friends discover that to make a business successful, you don’t need big money. All you need is a big idea. All is well and hunky dory till one day the four maverick entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop.

The best thing about BADMAASH COMPANY is that you identify with the mindset of those who aspire to reach the pinnacle of success using shortcuts. The scams and the con games the youth indulge in are easy to decipher and least complicated, which works in its favour. Another strong point is the camaraderie that the four actors share on screen.The film would’ve fallen flat if the chemistry was missing, but the bonding looks so real that you forget that they are merely enacting those roles.

BADMAASH COMPANY has some terrific moments. The sequences in Bangkok are enjoyable. Ditto for the showdown between the friends in the post-interval hour. The transformation in Shahid’s persona is also beautifully depicted. But, like I pointed out at the outset, the second hour tends to get repetitive and the penultimate 25-odd minutes are a strict no-no.

Pritam’s music is foot-tapping and almost every song has been filmed very well. Sanjay Kapoor’s cinematography is just right.

Every actor puts his best foot forward in BADMAASH COMPANY. Shahid gets it right yet again. It wouldn’t be erroneous to say that this is amongst his finest works. Watch him blow his lid in the restaurant sequence and also in another sequence, when he meets a pregnant Anushka. He is confidence personified in those sequences.

Anushka is a revelation. She looks stunning, her performance is livewire and the chemistry with Shahid is electrifying. Strangely, she took a backseat after her debut in RAB NE BANADI JODI, but BADMAASHCOMPANY will bring her back in public eye. Vir Das is another surprise. He’s in terrific form here. The film marks the ‘birth’ of another talent — Meiyang Chang — who adds a lot of freshness and zing to his character. Anupam Kher is wonderful. Kiran Juneja makes her presence felt. Pawan Malhotra is extremely likeable.

On the whole, BADMAASH COMPANY is a watchable experience for various reasons, the prime reason being it offers solid entertainment, but doesn’t insult your intelligence. Recommended!

Movie Review: It’s a Wonderful Afterlife (2010)

It set me thinking as reel after reel of Gurinder Chadha’s IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE unspooled. We [the Bollywood reviewers/critics] are extremely harsh on films produced on hometurf. We go hammer and tongs after these film-makers, as if they have committed a crime that they cannot be absolved of. We tend to ridicule films, its makers, the actors in those films… in fact, just about everyone associated with those films.

How about using the same yardstick for movies attempted by names that command tremendous respect in the West? We forgive them, most of the times. We even turn a blind eye, ignoring the deficiencies only because the West holds them in high esteem. The thought crosses our mind pretty often: Wouldn’t we come across as complete nincompoops if we ridiculed them, even if they turn up with pure trash?

I am not going to mince words. With IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE, celebrated film-maker Gurinder Chadha hits a new low. It actually makes me wonder, was BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM a fluke? IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE is so insipid and hollow that it makes her previous film BRIDE & PREJUDICE, considered by many as her weakest film, look like an epic in comparison.

Final word? IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE had everything going in its favour. But let’s not forget that great vegetables don’t necessarily make a yummy meal. This Gurinder Chadha curry is just not palatable!

Mrs. Sethi [Shabana Azmi], a widow, can’t bear the thought of her daughter being alone and unhappy. When Mrs. Sethi can no longer stomach the rudeness of families who refuse her daughter, she takes matters into her own hands with the only way she knows… suddenly a police hunt begins for a serial murderer.

Mrs. Sethi doesn’t feel too guilty until the spirits of her victims come back to haunt her, as they are unable to be reincarnated until their murderer dies. Mrs. Sethi has no problem killing herself — she’ll get to see her dead husband again — but how can she go before her daughter is married? The spirits realize that helping Mrs. Sethi find a suitable husband for her daughter, before the police catch her, is their only chance for a wonderful afterlife.

On paper, perhaps, the story of IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE may sound tempting and alluring. At least I found it attention-grabbing when I first heard it, several weeks ago. But sitting through those 1.40 hours of this cinematic journey is an ordeal. Seriously, what were writers Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges thinking when they wrote the screenplay? Barely a few minutes into the film, you realize that Chadha has lost the plot already.

To state that the screenplay is shoddy would be putting it mildly. The only aspect that’s amusing and which bears the unmistakable stamp of Chadha are the sequences between Shabana and the spirits. The love story is a total yawn, while the emotional moments are weak and the investigation of the murders is half-baked too. In fact, an investigating officer gets killed in the backyard of Shabana’s home and guess what, the crime is conveniently forgotten, except when Senthil talks about it to Shabana. And why the beaten to death ‘cancer’ end? Gurinder seems to be watching too many [terrible] Bollywood films, seems like.

Talking of performances, Shabana is dependable, as always. Goldy Notay as Shabana’s daughter is efficient. Sendhil Ramamurthy is alright. Jimi Mistry doesn’t get ample scope. Sally Hawkins is first-rate. Mark Addy is passable. Sanjeev Bhaskar is wonderful. Shaheen Khan and Zoe Wanamaker [Shabana's next-door-neighbour] are decent.

On the whole, this one’s a woeful experience, not wonderful by any standard!

After a couple of nights, Ben sees weird images in the mirrors, but due to the lack of credibility of his past, his ex-wife Amy believes he has hallucinations as a side effect of his medication. When Angie is found brutally murdered in her bathtub, Ben discovers that there is an evil force in the mirror that is chasing him and jeopardizing his family.

We are now accepting applications for the next postgraduate program in political science, which will start on 1 October 2010.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in political science or other disciplines relevant to the program. Degrees should be received by October 2010. Excellent command of the English language is essential since the working language of the program is English. Above all, interested candidates will have to demonstrate that they are willing and able to embark upon a PhD project on a topic related to the theme of the program.

Conditions

The program starts on 1 October 2010. Successful candidates will have access to fully-equipped office space at the institute and enjoy the full range of IHS support services. We offer 8 fellowships of 850 Euro per month (tax-free), but participation in the program is also possible for a limited number of additional students with alternative sources of funding.
